An Offensive Euphemism
Posted by rantingkraut on August 7, 2006
This ‘news item’ goes back to April: it seems that the expression ‘Visible Ethnic Minority (VEM)’ is not politically correct enough for the Metropolitan Black Police Association. It is difficult to imagine a more stereotypically PC linguistic contortion than that, but they are not having it:
“The Chair of the Metropolitan Police Black Police Association [sic] (MBPA), George Rhoden, today welcomed the banishment of the term Visible Ethnic Minority from Metropolitan Police textbooks and terminology.”
Maybe the problem is that any euphemism invented in reference to a given minority becomes unacceptable once it is actually associated with it. There is no replacement expression mentioned in the press release, but considering that PC euphemisms tend to get longer and longer, the new acceptable phrase will probably be something like:
‘Person Considered Pertinent to a Spontaneously Identifiable Community of Partly Shared Genotypical Heritage (PCPSICPSGH)
(This expression will become offensive after: [insert date here] )’
